Should You Replace Your Sump Pump?

6/7/2021

Your sump pump will protect your basement from flooding when it rains a lot.  Your sump pump collects water from drains and diffuses it away from the house, generally into a basin on the basement floor.  A decent sump pump should endure for ten years or more.  Your sump pump, on the other hand, may go undetected for weeks at a time since it only functions when it is needed.

Remember that your sump pump is at its busiest during spring showers or summer thunderstorms.  Before the next big storm, keep an eye out for these warning signs to avoid sump pump failure and basement flooding.

Ensure that the backup power system is operational.

Even if your sump is in good operating order, severe rainfall might knock out your power and render it unusable.  If you don't have a generator, you might be able to utilize a rechargeable battery pack to keep your sump pump running for a few hours during a power outage.  Many modern sump pump systems, in fact, have a battery backup system as standard equipment.  You can consider a battery-powered backup sump pump in case your pump fails or requires assistance.

The sump pump turns on and off frequently.

If your sump pump cycles on and off frequently, the basin may be too tiny to handle the amount of water in your basement.  Overstressing your sump pump may lead it to burn out, so we recommend getting in a deeper basin to ensure that it is only used when necessary.  Your Aaron Swift plumber can install a sump pump basin that holds 20 to 30 gallons rather than the five-gallon kind.  While a larger basin needs a wider hole in your floor, it is less expensive than replacing your sump pump.

The sump pump is constantly running without reason.

It's likely that your sump pump is weak for the volume of water it's managing or the distance it needs to push it if it runs for several minutes at a time.  If one of these limits is exceeded, the pump must continue to run forever.  Sump pumps are scaled according to how much water they can pump in an hour (GPH).  Consider upgrading to a larger model with a higher GPH and higher efficiency to minimize breakdowns.  If you're unsure, a plumber can assist you in determining how much water your sump pump can handle.

There is a noticeable amount of water leaking in the basement.

Your sump pump works overtime during heavy rainfall, but it also operates when water seeps into your basement due to ground pressure, melting snow, or leaking pipes.  While sump pumps cannot prevent water from entering your home, they do serve an important purpose in draining water from your basement.  It's likely that your plumbing is leaking or that your sump pump isn't operating correctly if you've noticed increased puddling or gathering of water on your basement floor.  Your plumber can determine whether to repair or replace it, but you'll need a working sump pump to minimize water damage in your basement.
