Don’t Let Your Pipes Freeze

Frozen pipes are one of the worst things to happen to you as a homeowner.  It not only stops the flow of water in your pipes, frozen pipes will cause an increase in pressure and can very well damage your pipes or cause your pipes to burst.  So, with a couple more months of wintery weather ahead of us, how can you stay on top of preventing frozen pipes?

To slow the process of heat transfer in pipes, and to contain heat in pipes during winter, we first suggest that homeowners wrap their pipes with insulation sleeves.  We strongly recommend doing this in crawl spaces, cellars and basements that have exposed pipes with higher risks of freezing more quickly.

Drain Your Water System Before Vacation Time

Do you have a big mid-winter trip to the Caribbean planned?  If you’re going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, we suggest draining your pipes before you depart.  In the event of temperatures dropping while you’re away, clearing your system of water will certainly prevent the risk of your pipes bursting.  Generally, when you’re away, you can save money on water, gas and electric bills by shutting everything down for the time being.

Let Faucets Drip Water for Circulation

Turn on the faucet ever-so-slightly to allow a small amount of water to flow through your pipes.  As long as there is a constant flow of water circulating in your pipes, the water cannot freeze.  This is important for nights that drop well below freezing temperatures (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
