Garbage Disposal No Nos

12/3/2019

Aaron Swift Plumbing provides the best sewer and drain cleaning.  However, we also offer preventive tips for residents in Oakland County and the surrounding areas who want to avoid potential issues.

One of the most common complications with our clients’ plumbing is the condition of their garbage disposal.  These are powerful appliances that can grind many different foods, but we want you to know that some foods are not so easily grindable.

From basic garbage disposal inspection to plumbing video inspection, we have the expertise to serve you and get your garbage disposal back to normal.  Depending on the severity of your issue, we may need to do a full-scale removal of your garbage disposal to combat the root of the issue (likely deep in your pipes).  We do not want you to have to spend hours during your off days trying to fix it yourself.  Let the professionals at Aaron Swift help you!

In order to be proactive and prevent yourself from a potential garbage disposal issue, just remember the following list of food items that SHOULD NEVER go into a garbage disposal:

  • Banana peels
  • Bones
  • Eggshells
  • Nuts
  • Oatmeal
  • Oils, butter, and margarine
  • Onion skins
  • Pasta (in bulk)
  • Potato peels
  • Pumpkin pulp and seeds
  • Starchy, fibrous vegetables
  • Trash

If you can prevent yourself from putting most, if not all, of the above list down your drain, then we’re in business.  For the most part, excessive amounts of oil, butter and pumpkin pulp can sludge and create significant sewage blockage.  Other things like bones, eggshells, nuts and potato peels are very coarse or fibrous, making it especially difficult to break down in the disposal.

We even recommend that you do not put pasta, bread and other foods that expand with water into your garbage disposal.  It may not seem like an issue while doing the dishes; however, glutinous foods will constantly soak up water, even all ground up and sent through the disposal.  The root of the issue is not about the leftover scraps that you didn’t eat at dinner.  It’s about that pot of pasta that you can’t use because everyone is too full to eat it.  If you cannot possibly use the cooked pasta, refrain from wasting it and freeze it for an upcoming meal.

The plumbing professionals at Aaron Swift Plumbing want you and your family to enjoy a fun and hassle-free holiday. However, plumbing catastrophes can quickly put a damper on festivities. Think about it. So, a take a few simple precautions to decrease your risk. Or, if you do experience plumbing issues during the holiday season, contact Aaron Swift for pipe repair, sewer service, or emergency plumbing services.

However, if someone accidentally puts a generous amount of the foods listed above into the garbage disposal or drain – or anything else that should not find its way into the drain – call Aaron Swift.  We provide fast, professional, affordable drain clearing.  We also offer emergency plumbing services when disaster strikes.  We are your trusted plumbers in the Washington area as leaders in the plumbing and sewer industry.
